Long Trail

August 7

The cedar wax wings were talking this morning. They were out yesterday and would land just a few feet from us, but I didn't actually see them this morning, just heard them.

The shelter woke up at 5:30 and once one person wakes up the rest of the shelter is bound to follow.

I said goodby to all the wonderful people that I will probably never get to see again. We as usual were the last ones out, but we did get out by 8:00.

We saw Jerry Springer again at the top of Glastenbury Mt. He had just come down from the fire tower and said there were no views again this mornigng. Which wasn't surprising with all the fog.

The hiking was much easier this morning then it had been. We still had a few trail-streams but not many mud wallows.

We made the 4.1 miles to Kid Gore Shelter in the speedy time of 3 hours. Then we took an hour to eat lunch.

We decided that stopping at 11am was a little to wimpy even for the likes of us, so we continued on to Story Spring Shelter.

We got in just before 3:30 and put down our pads. Only one other person was here - Buckeye. But eventually it all filled up.

Story Spring Shelter is dumpy compared to Goddard. Goddard was a beautiful spacious shelter with an overlook down the mountain. Story Spring has water running down the front so everything is muddy. And it is small and dirty.

The great part of the day was NO RAIN. Yes! It was humid but it never rained on us when we hiked and we could fire up the zip stove and cook coffee cake and mac and cheese (for Beth) and rice (for me).

Most of the thru-hikers were young. I didn't really socialize with them much. Beth and I were tired. We were in bed by 6:30 trying to read. After reading the same sentance 5 times and still not knowing what it said, I gave up and closed my eyes, but didn't really sleep until after 9.

The flora has been much the same as before, but we are starting to see moose signs. I looked hard when I got to the marshy area, but no luck with seeing an actual moose.
